Our Purpose
In the Alabama Council of the Blind’s annual Dancing with ‘Dega Stars event, Talladega “stars” and dancers fundraise for visually impaired individuals’ higher education by vying for awards, audience votes, and judges’ favor.
According to CDC Disability and Health data, 6.3 percent of Alabamians 18 or older reported a vision disability from 2016 to 2019, averaging 244,000 adults per year. Through Dancing with ‘Dega Stars proceeds, the Alabama Council of the Blind funds scholarships for visually impaired students in Alabama’s public and private schools, averaging over $20,000 a year in assistive technology grants and scholarships.
We believe in providing tools and training that permit blind or visually impaired people to participate equally in society and be the best they can be, including education and employment.
